Uneven floors cause more problems than you think. Before any new flooring can be installed, the surface underneath needs to be level. At FKR Constructions, we level concrete and cement floors across Melbourne using proven techniques and premium materials. Whether it’s a kitchen renovation or a commercial fit-out, we help you start with the right foundation.
With over 16 years of industry experience, we’ve seen it all. We’ll walk you through how our team levels floors step by step and why getting this part right is so important.
What is Floor Levelling?
Floor levelling isn’t just smoothing things out. It corrects inconsistencies in height, slope, and surface condition. We use a chemical self-levelling compound that flows into low points and forms a hard, even layer. This ensures the surface is stable before you install tiles, vinyl, carpet, timber, or polished concrete.
At FKR, we work on:
- Existing concrete slabs
- Cement-based subfloors
- Timber overlays
- Floors with underfloor heating
- Old floors with patchy repairs or dips
Step 1: Surface Check and Preparation
Every project starts with a site visit. We inspect the floor for damage, cracking, slope, and signs of moisture. We check for:
- Loose concrete or crumbling areas
- Water damage or rising damp
- Unstable timber or movement
- Previous patch jobs that are failing
Once we understand the condition, we clear away dust, debris, and surface coatings. If needed, we grind the floor or fill cracks. This prep work is what allows the levelling compound to properly adhere.
Step 2: Primer Application
We don’t skip primer. It’s critical for bonding. Once the floor is clean, we apply a primer to seal the surface and prevent air bubbles from forming in the mix. This layer also helps the levelling product spread evenly instead of soaking into the slab.
Step 3: Mixing the Compound
The mixing stage is where things can go wrong if rushed. At FKR, we follow a precise ratio to ensure the compound flows properly without separating or drying too fast. We use a free-flowing chemical leveller that outperforms standard products.
We mix in small batches to maintain consistency and avoid setting issues on hot or windy days.
Step 4: Pouring and Spreading
We pour the compound directly onto the floor and guide it with a trowel or gauge rake. Because it’s self-levelling, it flows naturally across the surface and fills in the low points. In larger areas, we may use a spiked roller to remove air bubbles and help the mixture settle.
This step is time-sensitive. Once poured, the compound begins setting fast, usually within 15 to 30 minutes. We work quickly to make sure every part of the floor is level before it hardens.
Step 5: Curing Time
Every levelling product has a specific cure time. Most floors can be walked on after a few hours. The final floor such as tiles, timber, or carpet shouldn’t be installed until the leveller is fully cured.
We provide clear timing guidance after every job. Rushing into the next step before it’s ready is a common cause of floor failure.
